How to Start a Business on the Side
Plenty of people are starting side businesses to earn a little extra cash. You may need to find out about finance borrowing options in business to get a little capital together first to fund equipment and supply purchases, but after that you can start to make some money. Create a joint venture with a spouse or a partner and operate it out of a spare bedroom, a garage, or a basement. It’s really up to you to decide what you need to get started to create the home business of your dreams.
Cash
There will be emergencies that require cash to solve, so keep savings or have easy lines of credit ready to solve the cash flow problem. Some new business owners will fund everything with credit cards, but they can come with large interest rates and be hard to pay off. You will eventually have to locate lenders if you want your business to grow, so might as well start now.
Space
The space that you choose to operate your business should have a way to get Internet, phone, and electric service to it. If you use a cell phone, you don’t need a phone jack. If you have WI-FI installed in the house, it’s easier to pick any room in the house. If none of this is available, your choices become more limited. You will at least need electricity to the space to operate computers, printers, and any other type of electrical equipment required for your business. Thus, if you’re planning on working in an outside shed or the garage, make sure there are plenty of outlets available.
Equipment
The equipment you need will depend on the type of business you are doing. If you are going to do jewelry design, you may need some tables, some magnifying lenses, some bins for beads, etc. and some jewelry tools. If you are going to program and freelance over the Internet, you will need a computer, an Internet connection, software for developing programs, and a desk and chair. Most offices will require a computer, simply to keep track of income and expenses every month.
Advertise
Once you have a location and a skill or product you are selling, you need to advertise your services. You can do set up online portfolios for freelance work in job boards that are looking to hire freelancers. You can look at specific forums that deal with your specialty and start advertising there, as long as you follow the rules. You should always set up a social networking profile and have a way for people to reach you and a place where you can display images of your work. The more you find out about marketing the better to help you sell your services, whether online or offline. If you are a craftsperson you may want to have a stall at craft fairs where people can pick up and touch some of your crafts. Just continue to sell as much as you can and the business will grow as your audience grows.
