Women in Business

792109_waiting_womanThe business world is one that women have had some difficulty breaking into as men seem to dominate on almost every level imaginable. Over the past few decades, women have made an impact on the business world, but it does seem as though their presence in the higher ranks is very sparse overall. Sure, we see many women in managerial roles, but it seems as though we rarely see women vice presidents or CEO’s. Recent statistics tell the whole story as women make up almost half of the workforce in general, but only a very small percentage of officers in the business world. Not only do we rarely see women in high ranks in business, they also make far less than their male counterparts in these roles. Recent statistics show that only 2.4% of Fortune 500 CEO’s are women, which is simply the way business works at this stage in our human development. Even in the smaller companies, where they cling to the male dominant stereotype, women just don’t fit in these roles due to their lack of emotional detachment. These failing companies, who have millions in outstanding business loans just to stay afloat, would rather stick with an old-world stereotype than give a smart, driven woman a chance.

At least in the lower echelons, women make up a good percentage of employees. Over 50% of managerial, professional and related are held by women, showing that they are perfectly capable of leadership, but clearly to an extent. It can be said that women simply don’t go for the most stressful of jobs, but that is simply not the case. In this case, that may be true, but if such a large percentage of workers are just below these job titles, it would make more sense to delve into that sector to see if any women would be capable leaders, brining a whole different viewpoint to business in general. Since females make up only 15% of Fortune 500 corporate officers, they are clearly being shut out or understand that the pay may be high, but the sacrifices to do such a job, simply too high to be considered rational on any meaningful level.

As time moves forward, one would expect these numbers to get higher, but as the business climate changes; you never know how it will evolve and what impact women will have on business in general. Since they usually bring another viewpoint, many businesses would benefit from promoting women into these roles to help change and evolve the business world for the better. Once the corporate culture is transformed, you, as a business owner, can look at the differences between male and female leaders and decide what works best for you, but currently, it is hard to tell what women bring to the table since their presence is truly just a blip on the radar at the moment. Women are nurturers, so maybe they can be the ones to nurture businesses and foster then to great success. In the current climate, a change is needed and maybe this is exactly what needs to happen, more women as corporate leaders.
