Marketing to the Short Attention Span
Your advertising campaign may be funded with tons of dollars from a merchant business loan, but that does not mean you have to spend it all at once. In fact, the average consumer’s attention span has shortened over the years with the introduction of the Internet, social networks, and instant messaging and mini-campaigns here and there may work better. People are becoming very accustomed to getting their information in bite-sized chunks that before may have qualified as barely an introduction. To keep your marketing effective, it’s a good idea to use several marketing forums to get your message across and keep it short.
Email Campaigns
If you are using email campaigns, do not spend too much time writing out lengthy emails. Instead, focus on getting attention-grabbing subject headings on the email as that will determine whether anyone opens it or not. People sign up for many email campaigns and ultimately pick and choose what they read based on that tiny message they see in the subject heading, so make it count.
Twitter Campaigns
If you opt to create a marketing campaign on Twitter, a micro-blogging site, you will really have to learn the art of being brief. You will only have 140 characters to get your message across in spurts over the course of the day. If it’s not interesting, funny, intriguing, or educational, you can expect no on to bother clicking any links associated with it. Speaking of links, do not waste too much space on the URL address you are promoting. Always use a URL shortener so that you can get the maximum out of the 140 characters in Twitter. Ask for retweets when possible, but don’t hassle your followers too much. Accounts with too many tweets often get dropped as people want to hear your message, just not 24 hours a day, no matter how short.
Video Ads
Keep your Youtube Videos or commercials very brief and start out strong. There is no introduction necessary and the quicker you can get to the point, the better. Youtube videos can be limited to 10 minutes or less, but optimally, probably five minutes is a good length. Do not leave dead space in the video and make it entertaining, too.
Text Messages
Some companies are taking to sending text messages. These must be short just to be viewed on a phone screen. It’s okay to use common abbreviations that others will recognize as it may actually make reading the text easier on a small screen.
Call for Action
All your online content should have a call to action to buy or click a link so that you get results. If you want someone to sign up for a newsletter or subscribe to a blog, do not ask for too much information up front to register. If you can get by with just an email and a password, which most services can, get the contact information first and foremost and leave the demographics for later. It’s more important to get that contact, and the visitor is not likely to fill out a very large form as opposed to a simple email and password form.
