New York Sees Social Networking Hiring Boom

Manhattan, New York City

Social networking isn’t just growing virtually, but it is also causing a small hiring boom. Companies like Twitter, Google, and Facebook all are expanding their facilities and their workforce. This is good news in an economy that has seen other sectors, like manufacturing, shrinking in the United States. New York has managed to attract all three with plans for an increased presence and hiring high tech talent to help those locations operate.

Google

This company has been expanding its offerings into social networking and with that comes a need to expand their space and workforce. New York is just one area where they have committed to operating a new facility. In preparation for this effort, Google bought 2.9 million square feet of office space in Chelsea, New York.

Facebook

Social networking offers the opportunity to hire tech talent in cities that have a very skilled workforce. Facebook has moved into New York in the hopes of hiring New York based engineers. This company normally operates out of the West Coast, but has a Manhattan office where it does its marketing and advertising. Now, there will be hiring opportunities for people on the East Coast to join the legendary social networking giant.

Twitter

Twitter is also expanding its offices in New York, although plans to hire have not been released. If the Mayor has his way though, they will have plenty of qualified candidates in the future. Mayor Bloomberg is planning to open a special school to train people in the applied sciences required by social networking startups. As social networking companies continue to experience large growth spurts, those cities that are able to attract them to their area will be the recipients of more job opportunities for their population. These are the type of jobs that governments can crow about too: high-paying, white collar, jobs. For New York, the decision to expand in their city amounts to a hiring spree at a very welcome time when the economy continues to sputter in the jobs creation area.
